According to Foot Mercato, Liverpool have named Xabi Alonso as their priority target to replace Jurgen Klopp when the German manager leaves Anfield at the end of the season.
The Premier League club have already established first contact with the Spaniard about the potential of succeeding Klopp on Merseyside, the French publication report. However, Liverpool are not the only club who are interested in the former Real Madrid midfielder.
Alonso has impressed many clubs this season as his Bayer Leverkusen side lead the Bundesliga and look to be a threat in the Europa League, according to Santi Aouna. The Foot Mercato journalist reports that Bayern Munich are one of his admirers and the board at the Bundesliga club appreciates him. Despite this, Thomas Tuchel’s position is not under threat in the short term.
Liverpool leading the race
With Bayern Munich unlikely to dismiss Tuchel anytime soon, this makes Liverpool the favourites to win the race to appoint Alonso as the successor to Jurgen Klopp. Alonso is reportedly happy in Leverkusen but with the job at his former club available, he could be seduced to take charge at Anfield.
