Liverpool add Flamengo’s Joao Gomes and Wolves’ Matheus Nunes to midfield wishlist

Liverpool have shortlisted Flamengo’s Joao Gomes and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ new signing Matheus Nunes as potential midfield targets.

Reinforcing the midfield turns out to be a top priority for Jurgen Klopp come January or next summer, having been hit by injuries this season and also players like Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner have entered the final year of their contracts.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham remains the priority, but the Reds could face tough competition from a host of European giants.

As a result, the Reds are now looking at potential alternatives, with Gomes and Nunes emerging as the latest targets.

According to Brazilian Journalist Julio Miguel Neto, the Reds are planning to submit an offer to Flamengo for Joao Gomes, who is considered one of the top prospects in Brazil.

Aged 21, Gomes has racked up more than 100 appearances for his boyhood club, winning the Brazilian league title in 2020 and Supercopa do Brasil the following year.

Although he can play as a central midfielder, his preferred position is number 6, meaning he could be an understudy to Fabinho or even his potential successor.

On the other hand, as per a report from UOL, Liverpool are also keeping tabs on Matheus Nunes, who moved to Molineux Stadium this summer in a club-record deal.

The former Sporting Lisbon midfielder had been on the radar of the Merseysiders during the summer transfer window before Bruno Lage’s side snapped him up.

It remains to be seen whether Wolves would be willing to sell their prized asset, whom they have signed for long-term plans, just after one season.
