Lille OSC midfielder Angel Gomes (24) is set to make his first start for the England national team as they prepare to take on Finland in the UEFA Nations League at Wembley on Tuesday.
The former Manchester United academy product previously worked with interim England manager Lee Carsley at U21 level and thanks to his consistency in a variety of roles at Lille over the past two seasons, earned a place in his first squad for the current international break.
Whilst he didn’t start against Ireland on Saturday, he did make a cameo off the bench and impressed with his ball retention and tidy work in possession. For the Three Lions’ second and final match of the international break, against Finland, Carsley is set to hand Gomes his first start, The Athletic understands.
