Former Rangers and Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard is in the frame to replace Daniel Farke at Leeds United, according to Football Insider.
After suffering heartbreak in the 2023/24 play-off final, Leeds have secured their return to the Premier League after a two-year absence from the top flight. Burnley’s victory over Sheffield United ensured that the Clarets and the Whites would ascend automatically, with Farke’s team still able to secure 100 points by the season’s end.
Just as was the case for much of his first season at Elland Road, Farke has been a constant source of calm in West Yorkshire as his side ground out results to finish within the top two. All associated with Leeds now have one eye on the top flight, as they hope to buck the worrying recent trend of promoted teams returning straight to the Championship.
Despite securing promotion, recent rumours have suggested that Farke could be on his way out of Leeds, with the club’s ownership reportedly concerned about the German’s past record in the Premier League with Norwich City. Were Farke to leave, it seems that the Whites already have a name in mind.
Gerrard to Replace Farke?
Leeds might make managerial switch
As per Football Insider, Steven Gerrard is one of three names on a shortlist of potential managerial candidates for Leeds. The former midfielder, who is a Liverpool legend, has not worked as a manager since January 2025, when he departed Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, who he joined in 2023.
To date, Gerrard’s best work as a manager came during his three years at Rangers, who he guided to an unbeaten Scottish Premiership title in his third and final full season in charge. His form in Scotland saw Aston Villa come calling, who gave the ex-England international a taste of management in the Premier League.

As can be seen, Gerrard’s form with the Villans was hardly sensational. Villa made the decision to sack him early in the 2022/23 season, just under a year after he was appointed. Since then, Unai Emery has taken Villa to new heights, with many of his players having been part of Gerrard’s relegation-battling side.
Such a record is scarcely enticing for Leeds fans as they prepare to watch their club in the Premier League once more. Farke has earned a chance to guide his team into the top flight and though his record there does not make for fun reading, it is worth considering that his time there thus far was with Norwich, who never really battled financially to stay in the division.
Whether or not Leeds make a managerial change remains to be seen, but Gerrard would certainly cause controversy amongst their fanbase.
