Leeds United are set for their return to the Premier League after a two-year absence, but left-back Junior Firpo is unsure about whether he will continue with the club next season despite promotion.
The former Barcelona ace signed with the Whites in the summer of 2021, becoming the first Dominican to play in the English top-flight. However, his four-year tenure has been plagued with injuries and setbacks to the EFL Championship.
Firpo’s contract is set to expire at the end of this season and, as things stand, he will leave Elland Road as a free agent, unless he agrees a contract renewal with the club.
Firpo Hesitant to Dedicate Future to Leeds
The defender’s contract is up this summer
Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Firpo provided the latest update on his immediate future, admitting he was still unsure about whether he was prepared to commit his future to the club following their promotion to the top division. He said:
“No, no, it’s the same [situation with his contract].
“Last time that we spoke, I probably told you that I was focused on promotion. Promotion is done now. But I don’t know. I don’t know. I think it’s something to speak with the club about maybe when the season is done, you know, and they have more clear plans as well. Let’s see what happens.”
Firpo has two seasons of Premier League football under his belt, but he struggled to adapt to the intensity of the competition at first. He managed just two assists in 24 outings in his first campaign, and he amassed just 14 starts in the season after.

Comparatively, Firpo has impressed in the tier below – he notched eight assists in the 2023/24 term and is currently set to register a new career-high for goals and assists this season, subsquently ranking as one of the best players in the Championship.
He could see Leeds’ promotion as an opportunity to address his past shortcomings, and he admitted that this was an appealing prospect for him:
“It might be something that I would like to do, going to the Prem and playing at a good level to say that I’m Prem-proven and let people know this. But as I said let’s see what happens.”
Meanwhile, boss Daniel Farke has confirmed that Leeds are now looking ahead to next season, intent on keeping their place in the Premier League for next season. Part of that will involve resolving contract situations for players like Firpo to ensure the squad has the depth required for the Premier League.
