Leeds United have missed their chance to sign PSV Eindhoven sensation Cody Gakpo after the forward’s electric start to the new season, according to journalist Dean Jones.
Jesse Marsch was handed more than £90 million to bolster his side in the summer but ultimately missed out on one of his most exciting targets.
What is the latest on Gakpo?
The 23-year-old has started this season with a bang, scoring 13 goals in just 16 appearances and contributing a further 10 assists.
Leeds made a late bid to sign Gakpo during the summer transfer window, with director of football Victor Orta even flying out for face-to-face talks, according to The Athletic.
However, the report adds that PSV ultimately decided against selling their prized asset while Gakpo was also happy to stay.
The Dutch giants were understood to be asking for £38 million for the services of Gakpo in the summer, as Manchester United also looked into a deal.
Leeds reportedly continued their pursuit of the forward beyond the deadline although the player now has his focus on a move to either the Red Devils or Real Madrid.
What has Jones said on Leeds’ chances?
Jones believes that the Whites have missed their chance to complete a deal for Gakpo following his sensational start to the season.
The journalist adds that the Netherlands international deserves to be challenging for silverware with one of the best teams in the world.
Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “This is a player who deserves to be looked at by clubs who are chasing titles, chasing trophies. He is a serious player. He’s also going to the World Cup and I expect him to have a good tournament too. He’s started to make an impact in that Netherlands team. I personally think that the chance for Leeds to sign him has passed by and they’ll have to look elsewhere now.”

Do Leeds need attacking reinforcements?
Marsch’s side have experienced a mixed start to the campaign, currently sitting in 14th place with eight games played, although they boast a fixture in hand on those above them.
In an attacking sense, it has been an adequate showing for Leeds so far this season, scoring 11 goals across their top-flight matches, more than the likes of Everton and Bournemouth who sit above them.
It is at the other end where the disappointment largely lies, having kept just two clean sheets this season and conceded 12 goals.
