Lampard now ‘seriously pushing’ for £20m signing at Goodison Park

Everton manager Frank Lampard is pushing for Blackburn Rovers striker Ben Brereton Diaz to be brought to Goodison Park this month, journalist Simon Phillips has told GiveMeSport.

The 23-year-old has been linked with a switch to the Toffees in the past, and Phillips says they are now considering making a move for him.

Everton transfer news – Ben Brereton Diaz

Transfer insider Dean Jones informed GMS last month that Brereton Diaz is definitely a player who Everton like.

Interest in Brereton Diaz is not new, with reports claiming that the Chile international was a target for the Merseyside club last summer.

According to Football Insider, Everton, Nice and Celta Vigo all registered an interest in signing Brereton Diaz in the previous transfer window, with the same outlet claiming that the last of that trio even made a bid for the player.

In the July of the summer that has just gone, The Sun claimed that Blackburn valued their talisman at £20m. With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, it will now be interesting to see if his employers settle for a lower fee this month if they do decide to sell him.

What has Simon Phillips said about Ben Brereton Diaz and Everton?

Phillips has told GMS that Lampard wants Brereton Diaz at Goodison Park, and the journalist does not think the Blackburn man would cost too much money.

On Brereton Diaz and Everton, he said: “They’re pondering a move and he will be a cheap option. Lampard is seriously pushing for that signing again.”

Should the Everton board sign Ben Brereton Diaz for Frank Lampard if possible?

It depends. It is clear that Everton need to bring in a new striker before the end of January.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin keeps picking up injuries, while they have not scored enough goals this season. Their tally of 14 is one of the worst in the Premier League.

With reports claiming that the Everton board are considering getting rid of Lampard, though, they need to be careful.

According to The Telegraph, the 44-year-old is now on the brink at Goodison Park after his side’s latest loss to Brighton. If that is the case, signing Brereton Diaz could prove counter-productive. What if his profile is not a good fit for the next Everton boss? He could end up being a pointless investment at a time where the Toffees cannot afford to waste any more money.

Given that there is a need for a new forward in that part of Merseyside, whoever replaces Lampard if the former Chelsea manager is sacked would probably find some use for Brereton Diaz. But if the Blackburn man does not suit his style, in the long run, there is going to be a problem.

Ultimately, then, it may be wise for Everton to hold off from handing Lampard what he wants.
