Real Madrid centre-forward Kylian Mbappé (26) has scored from a direct free-kick for the first time in his career. The France captain could hardly have chosen a better time to shut the memes down as Real Madrid were trailing 1-0 to FC Barcelona in Saturday night’s Copa del Rey final. Mbappé hit a fierce right-footed shot off the right post and in, well beyond Wojciech Szczęsny’s reach. Mbappé became the outright top French goalscorer in finals, breaking Karim Benzema’s record of 11.
Mbappé has also outdone the performance of one of the all-time Real Madrid greats: none other than his idol Cristiano Ronaldo, as reported by Stats Foot. Indeed, during his debut season with Los Merengues following his €94m switch from Manchester United, the Portuguese striker scored 33 goals. In his debut season in the Spanish capital, the former PSG forward has found the back of the net 34 times. Mbappé is three goals short of equalling Ivan Zamorano’s record. The Chilean legend hit 37 goals in his first campaign with Real Madrid during the 1992-1993 campaign.
