Bayer Leverkusen’s striker Christian Kofane scored his second goal of the tournament as Cameroon knocked out South Africa to make the last eight at the AFCON. David Pagou’s side will face hosts Morocco in the quarter-final.
Kofane made his Cameroon debut in the second game of the group stage against Côte d’Ivoire. He then scored the winner three days later against Mozambique. The 19-year-old doubled his tally on Sunday with a fine header that put Cameroon 2-0 up early in the second-half.
The Indomitable Lions took a first-half lead through Stoke City’s defender Junior Tchamadeu. Kofane, who has already scored five goals in all competitions in his debut season with Die Werkself, extended their lead two minutes after the restart.
In the end-to-end half, the youngster missed a great chance to seal the win, but Cameroon avoided a late scare after South Africa pulled one back in the 88th minute. Kofane will go head-to-head against his Leverkusen teammate Eliesse Ben Seghir when the five-time winners lock horns with hosts Morocco on Friday.
