Key new signing is now a ‘priority’ at Anfield

Liverpool’s ‘priority now’ is bringing in a central midfielder following their early-season struggles, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

The Reds have endured a difficult opening few months of 2022/23 due to a lack of form and injury issues, and their midfield has arguably been the area of the pitch under the most scrutiny.

What is the latest news involving Liverpool?

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher recently described Fabinho as a ‘ghost’ due to his underwhelming displays in the current campaign.

Meanwhile, the likes of Thiago, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have spent significant spells on the sidelines through injury.

That has left youngsters Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho and veteran James Milner to fill in with limited success, and Jurgen Klopp even admitted he needed midfield reinforcements towards the end of the summer window.

“We are looking for it, and if it is the right player, we need him, and if it is not the right player, we don’t need him,” said Klopp in a press conference.

Liverpool then signed Arthur Melo on a season-long loan from Juventus, but he soon took up residency on the treatment table after making one 13-minute substitute appearance.

What has Sheth said about Liverpool?

When asked if Klopp needs to accelerate his plans to strengthen his engine room, Sheth told GiveMeSport that bringing in a midfielder will be at the top of the German’s wish list.

He said: “Potentially, I think it’s obvious that they were after a central midfielder in the transfer window.

“There was all this talk about Jude Bellingham, they ended up getting Arthur Melo, who’s now injured and hasn’t really played at all for Liverpool.

“But with regard to bringing in a central midfielder, I think that is a priority now. Whether they go into the market in January will also depend on whether a long-term target becomes available.”

Who could Liverpool sign?

James Pearce of The Athletic has reported that Liverpool are ‘very interested’ in enticing Jude Bellingham to Anfield as they look to overhaul their options in the middle of the park.

However, Pearce claims there will be ‘serious competition for the England international’s signature’ in the summer of 2023 when Europe’s elite go head-to-head for him.

The likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid and Chelsea have also been listed as potential suitors for Bellingham, who is believed to have a price tag of £103 million.
