Joshua Zirkzee’s stance on Manchester United exit revealed after Serie A links

Joshua Zirkzee wants to stay at Manchester United for the rest of the season, according to The Sun’s Samuel Luckhurst.

Serie A club Roma have been credited with a transfer interest, but the 24-year-old has expressed his desire to stay at Old Trafford beyond the transfer deadline.

Zirkzee has been struggling for game time at United this season.

The Netherlands international has made 14 appearances in the Premier League so far, with 10 of them coming off the bench. He has scored two goals and an assist.

Zirkzee is currently behind Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo in the pecking order, despite the latter not being a natural striker.

He has missed the previous two matches through injury, but has resumed training this week and will likely be part of the matchday squad against Fulham.

Zirkzee joined United for £36.5 million after an impressive 2023-24 campaign for Bologna when he scored 11 goals in 34 Serie A matches.

However, he has failed to replicate that form in England, netting only nine times in 65 senior appearances.

The Dutch footballer was initially brought in as a striker to provide an alternative option to Rasmus Hojlund, but he appears more at ease as an attacking midfielder.

Zirkzee is highly rated for his link-up play and ball-carrying skills, but he is not a reliable goalscorer.

The forward’s contract will not expire until 2029, but United will likely sell him in the summer and attempt to sign a specialist striker to provide support for Sesko.
