Jose Mourinho has expressed uncertainty about his future at Roma after their Europa League final defeat to Sevilla on Wednesday in Budapest.
The Italian side made an impressive start to the final and found themselves ahead with Paulo Dybala’s strike after 34 minutes.
But the breakthrough led Mourinho to adopt a defensive approach and that ultimately backfired on them.
Rojiblancos grew into the game and managed to restore parity 10 minutes after the break through an own-goal from Gianluca Mancini.
Opportunities came to both sides but the scoreline remained the same until the end of extra-time, with the match going to penalties.
In the shootouts, only Bryan Cristante scored for Roma while all four Sevilla players hit their targets to seal a record-extending seventh Europa League title.
Mourinho, who joined the Serie A outfit in May 2021, said afterwards he is not sure he will continue in his role at Stadio Olimpico.
“I can’t say I will be here next season,” he said (quotes via The Guardian). “I will go on holiday on Monday, then we will speak. I told the owners I will tell them if I start talks with another club. As of now no other club called me. It is time for me to talk to the owners. It is time for the owners to talk to me.”
Mourinho had never lost a European final before Wednesday but his record came to an end yesterday at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.
He was clearly very unhappy as he handed his runners-up medal to a fan in the stand after the presentation.
His contract at Stadio Olimpico will run out in June 2024, but he may leave the club this summer.
Paris Saint-Germain have been credited with an interest in the Portuguese boss with Christophe Galtier expected to leave his position.
If they come up with a good offer, Mourinho will likely accept to join the Ligue 1 giants.
He has clearly impressed with his work at Roma, leading them to Europa Conference League success after victory over Feyenoord last year.
