Jose Mourinho lost a European final for the first time in his career, as Roma fell to a penalty shootout defeat to Sevilla.
Roma did take the lead through Paulo Dybala in the first half but a Gianluca Mancini own goal saw Sevilla draw level. As the game trudged into penalties, misses by Roger Ibanez and Gianluca Mancini saw Sevilla win their seventh Europa League title in history.
TMW report that after the game, Mourinho gathered his players in a circle and while being in the centre of it, he gave a speech to the emotional players and consoled them. He told them: “You played a great game, all of Europe saw you.”
Mourinho then held back his own tears and led the team to receive applause from Roma fans and he also applauded the Sevilla fans, who reciprocated in a classy gesture. Before the ceremony even started, Mourinho took his runner-ups medal and left the scene for the dressing room.
His future remains uncertain and the final may have been the last time we see him manage Roma from the sidelines.
