Speaking to the media (via kicker) following Bayer Leverkusen’s 1-1 draw with St.Pauli, defender Jonathan Tah has confirmed, once again, he will leave the club in the summer.
Tah’s contract at the BayArena expires in the summer. Earlier this season, he had confirmed that he would not extend his contract at the club and would leave upon its expiry. Yesterday, he reiterated this point:
“Everything was said from the start. There was a point in time when I made the decision not to extend my contract and not to stay here and it remains that way now.”
Where Tah will head next is unknown. Bayern Munich were interested last summer and tried to manufacture a move, but the attempt did not materialise and ultimately damaged relations between Bayern and Leverkusen. Barcelona have also been linked to the defender. What is completely ruled out is staying at the BayArena.
When it comes to replacing Tah, Leverkusen have already begun to look at alternatives. With AC Milan struggling in Serie A, German defender Malick Thiaw is said to be one of the options, especially if the Italians fail to qualify for Europe this season, which is looking increasingly likely.
After a great season last season, the 29-year-old has reverted to his usual form this season, as Leverkusen have also struggled.
