Jesus Owono Update Emerges Days After Jesus de Miguel Death

A fresh update has emerged over Jesus Owono, the goalkeeper involved in the on-field collision that tragically led to CD Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel’s death earlier this week.

A pathology report has revealed that De Miguel, who was only 30 years old, died from “accidental chest trauma” following the collision which occurred towards the end of Monday’s LaLiga 2 clash between Tenerife and Andorra.

Despite the best efforts of medical staff, the Spaniard’s death was announced on Tuesday morning.

Tenerife’s players and club staff, along with majority shareholder Rayco Garcia, attended De Miguel’s funeral at the San Miguel Arcangel church on Thursday.

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin and Spanish FA president Rafael Louzan were also among those in attendance.

“Feeling so much affection for Jesus and seeing the impact he had on so many people is something we will always carry with us,” De Miguel’s family said in a statement.

“Jesus leaves a void that is impossible to fill, but also cherished memories for all of us ‌who were fortunate enough to share our lives with him. Thank you for loving him and for standing by us.”

An investigation has been opened into De Miguel’s death, while Andorra’s goalkeeper Owono said in a statement: “These are the most difficult days of my life.”

“I struggle to find the words, and I find it very hard to process what has happened,” the 25-year-old, who has closed his Instagram account after receiving abusive message, said. “I know there will be many questions to address, and I will face whatever comes with the utmost respect.

“But right now, honestly, I cannot think about anything other than Jesus and the pain we are experiencing. Rest in peace, Jesus.”

Owono will miss Equatorial Guinea’s upcoming AFCON 2027 qualifiers after asking to be left out of the squad while he comes to terms with the situation.

A new report from Spanish outlet Marca reveals Owono has been “destroyed” by De Miguel’s death and is currently surrounded by his mother, family and former teammates who have driven to his house to be by his side.

Owono has “not set foot in the street” after De Miguel’s death was announced and “has cried and continues to cry every moment”.

Among those reportedly helping Owono through this immensely difficult time is Barcelona and Spain legend Gerard Pique, co-owner of FC Andorra, who is personally involved.

Meanwhile, Andorra’s fans have also offered their support to their goalkeeper. An open letter published by Marca, and translated into English, reads:

“Dear Jesus Owono:

“From the FC Andorra animation stand we want to send you all our support and affection in these hard and difficult times. We are aware of the suffering you are going through after what happened. We know that these are not easy days, but we want you to keep one thing in mind: you are not alone. By your side you have your family, your friends, your colleagues, the staff and the whole club. But you also have us, a hobby that appreciates you, respects you and that today, more than ever, wants to give you all their love and support.

“We also want you to know that we flatly reject all the insults, threats and judgments you are receiving these days. An accident does not define a person, much less his way of being. We don’t want pain, anger or helplessness to turn into hatred towards you. Behind the soccer player there is a person, with feelings and with a family that is also suffering.

“We want you to know that here is your house. That when you go out on the field again, to defend our goal and wear this shirt, you will have a stand that will continue to be by your side, encouraging you as always. Now you don’t have to prove anything to anyone. It won’t be easy and it will take time, but even if it costs and hurts you have to get ahead, you have to work to be able to recover that claw and smile that characterises you so much. The most important thing now is your recovery, but along the way you should know that you can count on us, that you are not alone.”
