Jamie Carragher notices what’s ‘not normal’ about Arsenal as title agreement reached

Jamie Carragher has given his verdict on Arsenal’s forward line as the Gunners continue their quest to win the Premier League title

Jamie Carragher has explained what he believes is ‘not normal’ about Arsenal’s title challenge this season – claiming the Gunners don’t have a ‘superstar’ in their team. Arsenal’s hopes of winning the Premier League were dented at the weekend thanks to a 3-2 defeat at home to Manchester United.

Mikel Arteta’s side have a four-point lead over Manchester City in the Premier League table after the weekend’s results, which also saw City claim a 2-0 win over Wolves.

Arsenal now have 15 games left to play in the Premier League this season, with an away trip to Leeds United next on the agenda at the weekend after their midweek action in the Champions League.

Carragher appeared on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, where he claimed that none of Arsenal’s forward players would get into the Premier League’s team of the season so far.

Arsenal’s top scorers in the league this season is Viktor Gyokeres and Leandro Trossard, who both have five goals to their name this term.

After that, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Eberechi Eze and Mikel Merino have all scored four goals each in the Premier League this season, with Carragher claiming that Arsenal do not have a “superstar” in their team.

Carragher said: “When have you ever seen a team at the top of the table, who have been top by six or seven points, but if you were picking the best team of the Premier League so far, you wouldn’t have one of their players in the front four?

“That is not normal, that would never happen. The best team in the league would always have at least one, maybe two players [forwards], in the team of the season.”

“Arsenal don’t have that right now, and that plays into the fact that they don’t have a genuine superstar at the top end of the pitch.”

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes was in agreement with Carragher during an appearance on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast.

Scholes explained why only Saka would be in consideration to be named in the Premier League’s team of the season so far from Arsenal.

“If Arsenal win the league, this could be the worst team to win the league,” said Scholes.

“If you’re thinking of picking a team of the season and picking the front four, nobody from the Arsenal team gets in that.

“Look at previous champions – Liverpool’s forwards, brilliant.”

“Possibly the only one is Saka, and I don’t think he’s been brilliant. He’s not scored many goals this year or assists.”
