Jack Wilshere Speaks Out After Argument With Luton Town Fans

Jack Wilshere has spoken out after shock footage captured him in a heated argument with Luton Town fans following his side’s 1-1 draw with Burton Albion on Saturday afternoon. The Englishman’s first permanent senior position in management has taken a huge turn for the worse, with the Hatters now languishing 10th in League One.

The Bedfordshire side were in the Premier League under Rob Edwards’ well-meaning tutelage just two seasons ago but, following successive relegations, Luton now appear well off the pace of returning to the promised land anytime soon. Their recruitment failures, combined with the financial reality of having punched well above their weight in higher divisions over several years, have come back to haunt them.

Following a short interim stint with Norwich City at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, Wilshere has become the latest young manager to take on the poisoned chalice at Kenilworth Road. But after just two wins in their last nine fixtures across all competitions – and none in their previous three – pressure is already mounting on the former Arsenal midfielder.

Having conceded a 92nd-minute equaliser after initially leading after 13 minutes, Luton’s draw at the weekend came in near-unforgivable circumstances against a side 20th in the league, just a week after losing away to relegation-zone Wigan Athletic. As Wilshere headed towards the tunnel at full-time, he appeared to pause and stare down the main stand before shouting words back while facing boos and jeers.

Speaking post-match, Wilshere addressed the reaction from supporters – an incident that saw his players drag him into the dressing room to avoid further complications – saying (watch the incident below): “It wasn’t just the end, it was from the first minute.

“The players were having to face that and, right now, in this moment, we have to accept where we are. We’re in League One because of what’s happened in the last couple of years. We’re fighting every single day to try and get better and to try and win games… we understand that Cardiff wasn’t good enough, Wigan wasn’t good enough, but we need belief.”

As per talkSPORT, he continued: “I’m trying to give the players belief, but you can clearly see at the moment that they are lacking it, and it then becomes difficult to play.

“I understand their frustrations. Of course I do. We have to do better in certain moments, but right now everyone has to be together. That is the only way that we can try to get out of this game, try to move forward and win games. It feels difficult at the moment.”

The former England international – who was tipped to achieve great things with Arsenal but sadly finished his career as one of the most injury-prone players in football history – started his coaching career by managing the Gunners’ Under-18s side. He led the team to the final of the 2022/23 FA Youth Cup in his first season in charge, in which they lost to West Ham.

However, he is currently looking like a fish out of water in the English football pyramid. He’s taken charge of 27 games in total at the club, winning 11, losing 10 and drawing six so far. Their form on the road has been particularly concerning, with Wilshere’s side currently on a losing streak of six matches away from home, with their last away victory coming on November 8 against Stockport County.

Luton will have had the aim of instant promotion back to the Championship after relegation last season, but they are currently 22 points off the automatic promotion spots and six off the play-off places.
