UFC star Irene Aldana has posted a photo showing an update on the horror injury she suffered at UFC 306 when she faced off with Nora Dumont at the Las Vegas Sphere.
The Mexico-born fighter may have made it to the final bell against Dumont, with her opponent securing the win via third-round decision, but it came at a high cost, with Aldana suffering what many fans have called the worst cut they have seen in UFC history.
In a photo which shows an update on the gash she suffered during the event, she has also responded to calls from fans on a separate Instagram post for her to retire following the injury.
What Happened to Irene Aldana at UFC 306
The two clashed heads midway through the fight, leading to a nasty gash opening on the side of her head, which commentator Jon Anik compared to the opening of a slot machine. Despite the nature of the cut, which continued to pour blood throughout the fight, Aldana managed to make it to the final bell, which led to praise from many, giving her credit for managing to focus on the task that remained at hand in front of her in her condition.
Her defeat came after a battling performance despite the unanimous decision that the judges scored in favour of her opponent. It was a close-fought contest regardless of Aldana’s injury, with all three judges scoring the bout 30-27 in favour of Dumont.
The defeat saw the 36-year-old record the eighth loss of her career, however, only two of those defeats came via KO/TKO, while the remaining six have come through split or unanimous decision.
Will Aldana Retire From UFC
Following her injury, many fans have further questioned as to whether her career should continue or not. The former title contender has now reached 36, which is where many fighters would struggle to pick up results against some of the best in their division, with many of the top fighters being at a young age. But, she showed her grit and determination against Dumont by making it to the final bell, something which could help her emerge victorious if she is to show those qualities while in peak condition.
The 36-year-old may already be plotting her return to action despite her injury at UFC 306, but one fan on social media chose to tell the Mexican star to retire, to which she responded with the same statement to the fan.
Currently ranked at number four in the women’s bantamweight division, Aldana has never held gold in the UFC, with a record of 15 wins and eight losses. UFC 296 saw her get her chance at a title when she took on Amanda Nunes in a fight she was heavily criticised for, dropping all five rounds, allowing the champion to retain her bantamweight championship.

For now, while healing from her wounds, it is important that she remains in the correct mindset upon her return to the UFC if she is focused on a return to competing for a title.
