Injury expert says £230k-a-week star ‘back in contention’ soon – GiveMeSport

Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana should be ‘back in contention’ to feature under Graham Potter once the Premier League resumes, according to injury expert Ben Dinnery.

The 21-year-old moved to Stamford Bridge over the summer after completing a £75 million switch from Leicester City but has been limited to just four appearances for his new club.

Chelsea injury news – Wesley Fofana

Fofana picked up a knee injury in the 3-0 victory over AC Milan on October 5 just minutes after he bagged his first goal for Chelsea, and Potter then stated that he’d be sidelined for ‘a few weeks’.

“Wesley’s knee is not as bad as we thought, so that’s good,” the 47-year-old tactician told a press conference ahead of the capital club’s Premier League clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

“After the game of course, you’re concerned. It’ll be a few weeks, I think, which is considerably better than it could be.”

Chelsea then released a statement at the end of the month confirming that Fofana, who earns £230,000-per-week, and his teammate Reece James would continue their rehabilitation programmes in Dubai.

What has Dinnery said about Fofana?

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “He was another one, the defender was probably touch and go on his availability for France.

“It would have been a gamble for Didier Deschamps to include him, and ultimately, they have quite a bit of strength in depth in that department as well, and the decision was probably made on the strength of that.

“But in terms of his availability for Chelsea, we would expect him to be back and fully integrated within that mini pre-season programme and, once those Premier League fixtures resume, he should be pushing and back in contention for the Blues.”

How have Chelsea coped without Fofana?

Chelsea topped Group E of the Champions League in Fofana’s absence, pulling off victories over Milan, Red Bull Salzburg and Dinamo Zagreb without him.

However, their domestic form took a real turn for the worst after suffering three consecutive defeats after being held to draws by Brentford and Manchester United.

That run of five Premier League games without a victory has seen Chelsea drop down to eight in the top-flight standings with fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur now eight points better off.

Chelsea host Bournemouth on December 27 in their first league fixture back following the mid-season pause for the World Cup, and Fofana, who Ben Chilwell says has a “massive future”, will surely be hoping he can help his team get back to winning ways then.
