‘I score once a year, I hope they don’t steal it off me’ – Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga believes he deserves credit for goal against Manchester City

It was a goal that certainly changed the direction of the match but it is a goal that is proving hard to attribute. Eduardo Camavinga’s (21) strike in the 12th minute against Manchester City took a sizeable deflection off Rúben Días on its way past Stefan Ortega. It allowed Real Madrid to equalise in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final against the Cityzens, cancelling out Bernardo Silva’s early opener. 

Currently, on UEFA’s website, the goal is marked as a Días own goal. However, speaking to Canal Plus post-match, French midfielder Camavinga said that he believes he should be credited with the goal. “Of course, my shot was on target. I score once a year, I hope they don’t steal it off me. I’m going to have a look now if I’ve been given it,” he said. 

The former Stade Rennais midfielder will have been disappointed with what he saw. With Días being credited with the goal, Camavinga is still yet to score this season for Real Madrid. The midfielder, who has scored one goal in his 15 appearances for Les Bleus, has just two goals in 133 appearances for Los Blancos. 

Shortly after Real Madrid’s contentiously-attributed equaliser, the La Liga side took the lead thanks to Rodrygo. Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol then reversed the deficit before a late Federico Valverde equaliser. The score is therefore 3-3 going into the second leg at the Etihad next week.
