It was a moment which could have changed Paris Saint-Germain’s fortunes last night against Liverpool, and many in the French capital were left questioning Italian referee Davide Massa. Of the most infuriated was PSG sporting advisor Luís Campos, who confronted the referee in the tunnel as the teams headed for halftime.
“It’s a red card or a penalty anywhere in the world! It’s a red or a penalty anywhere in the world!” shouted the Portuguese sporting director in an outburst captured by Canal+ cameras in the tunnel of the Parc des Princes.
Former Manchester United defender and current TNT Sports pundit Rio Ferdinand had no doubt in his mind over the challenge of Ibrahima Konaté on Bradley Barcola during Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes last night.
“That’s a foul,” said Ferdinand as VAR reviewed the action. “And it’s in his back, it’s a foul. That’s a red card. If that’s not a red card, I’ll be shocked. And it would be unfortunate for the game to go down to 10 vs. 11 because you want the best players to play on equal terms for 90 minutes.”
“I can’t believe how lucky Liverpool got with that decision. How did VAR not detect it? He crashes into the middle of his back,” Ferdinand added.
