How Chris Eubank Jr & Daniel Dubois Defied The Odds to Become British Sporting Superstars

Daniel Dubois and Chris Eubank Jr have pulled off something that seemed improbable only half a year ago, and it’s all because of what their recent landmark wins mean for the sport in their country.

British boxing was otherwise in danger of entering a nadir period — things that are relatively common, regardless of whether you’re following a combat sport, or your favorite football team. And the sport in Britain is perhaps overdue challenge times after producing some of the most important fighters internationally, capable of attracting crowds that would make those same football teams jealous.

For a long while, British prizefighters like Amir Khan, Anthony Joshua, and Tyson Fury have dominated the box office. But there were always questions over who exactly would succeed those superstar champions, if anyone at all.

After Dubois’s incredible knockout win over Joshua in 2024, and Eubank’s victory over Conor Benn last weekend, which has elevated his popularity enormously, those questions have now been answered. Few would have expected them to be able to do it, as they defied the odds to do so. Dubois was slammed by the industry for being perceived to have quit in his stoppage loss to Joe Joyce, while Eubank Jr had to live for a long while in the shadow of his enigmatic father.

Daniel Dubois & Chris Eubank Jr Are British Sporting Superstars

Dubois & Eubank showed they’re already succeeding Tyson Fury & Anthony Joshua

Dubois and Eubank have barely put a foot wrong. They’re suitable ambassadors for Britain, and for sport. They are unique personalities and unapologetically themselves. It has taken a while for the boxing public to warm to them, but they are becoming increasingly known on a mainstream level, and casual audiences are enjoying what they see.

Dubois does not talk or behave like a typical fighter. He is not Hollywood, and doesn’t talk s***. He hardly talks at all. He is introverted, and unassuming, but has become emboldened in recent fights — successive knockout wins over Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic, and Joshua. Though Dubois lost in the ninth round to Oleksandr Usyk two years ago, he’s a different fighter now, more accustomed to the biggest of stages, and will be confident that he can end the Ukrainian’s impressive reign when they trade leather once again on the 12th of July at Wembley Stadium in London. It’s likely they’ll sell as many tickets, if not more, than the England national football team has done at home.

Eubank, meanwhile, has had a celebrity name all his life having followed in the footsteps of his famous father, Chris Eubank Sr, as a prominent boxer. He marches to his own beat, speaks in a cool, calm, and collected manner, and, like his dad, appears to relish the limelight. Jr spoke this week in a way that fans had not seen before, with emotion, and everyone loved it.

With talk of how the weight cut could be more of a pain for him, surrendering an advantage to Benn, Eubank humanized himself by talking of what real pain is to him — losing his brother, Sebastian, three years ago. And having to hear his nephew, Harlem, who he now cares for, ask why his daddy doesn’t take him to school anymore. That’s real pain, Jr said, adding that losing communication with his own father, Sr, just adds to his pain. Eubank Sr and Jr have barely had a relationship of late, he revealed.

On fight night, some of that pain will have been relieved as Sr, never one to shy away from theater, turned up at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, seemingly unannounced, to accompany Jr to the ring, for the biggest fight of his life, after allegedly not speaking to him for years.

Together, they scored another win over the Benns, as Sr beat Nigel Benn in 1990, and shared a draw in the rematch. Last weekend, it was Jr’s turn — and, boy, did he deliver. They now have two wins and one draw, and remain unbeaten against the Benn family.

The Future is Bright For Daniel Dubois & Chris Eubank Jr

They is a way they can continue to sell out stadium venues for years to come

After knocking AJ out in front of a packed crowd, Dubois returns to one of the capital’s premier football venues to challenge Usyk for the undisputed world heavyweight championship title.

Win, or lose, the AJ victory has cemented his status. But I back the Londoner to claim all the belts for himself, and continue his status as a box office sensation, with ready-made challengers like Fury, if he can be coaxed out of retirement, Wilder, if the American returns to the ring successfully in June, or even Moses Itauma, a fellow Frank Warren fighter who is embarking on his own route to the top of the division.

Eubank, meanwhile, is poised to fight Benn once again in a contractually-mandated rematch, back at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Should he succeed, as expected considering the three scores of 116-112 that separated him from his career rival, then it’s likely he has everything he needs to lure the pound-for-pound staple Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez to England for a mega-fight.

British boxing is set to continue its modern day boom period in the post-AJ and Fury era, and it’s all thanks to Dubois and to Eubank.
