Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer has defended Thomas Tuchel’s angry outburst towards German football pundits Dietmar Hamann and Lothar Matthäus after Saturday’s match in Dortmund.

Herbert Hainer to remain Bayern president

In a post-match interview following his side’s 4-0 win over Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel expressed frustration at the criticism he received from the media in the run-up to the game, taking a swipe at German football pundits Dietmar Hamann and Lothar Matthäus.

“Why did we win today? Despite the cracks in the team and the lack of development? Lothar [Matthäus] certainly knows. If not him, then certainly Didi [Hamann]. I’m very happy with my team, everything was great,” Tuchel said.

Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer has now come out in support of his coach, saying he believes the criticism of Bayern’s season has been exaggerated at times.

“Everyone can express their opinion and criticize. Sometimes it seems that everything is in ruins and we are playing to avoid relegation. We haven’t lost a game yet and have won all our Champions League matches,” Hainer told Magenta TV.

“Yes, we were knocked out of the cup (against 3. Liga side Saarbrücken). Not good, but it can happen. I think it’s good that Thomas has now put up a stop sign. I like the fact that he’s so defensive. He has enough pressure, like all of us at Bayern.”
