Following the sacking of Hansi Flick as Germany coach, Ilkay Gündogan has posted an emotional message to the 58-year-old on Instagram.
“Thank you for the time together, the mutual appreciation and the cooperation, Hansi,” wrote Gündogan, who was named Germany captain shortly before the 4-1 loss to Japan in what turned out to be Flick’s final game in charge.
“You are a great person and coach – it is a great pity that we as a team could not repay your great trust in us.
“We will keep trying to learn as a team to come back stronger for a successful home European Championship 2024 – also for you! I wish you all the best for the future,” said Gündogan.
