Girona have returned to La Liga after spending three years in the Segunda División.
The Catalan club narrowly missed out on promotion in the last two seasons but this time, they have secured their place in La Liga for the 2022-23 season. It was not a straightforward path for Girona. They had to secure their place via the promotion playoffs.
Having finished sixth in Spain’s Second Division, they grabbed the last playoff spot. They were drawn against Eibar and went a goal down in the first leg but completed an impressive comeback in extra time of the second leg to win 2-1 on aggregate.
Their first leg playoff against Tenerife ended goalless and it was all to play for in the second leg. On Sunday night, they defeated Tenerife 3-1 to clinch their place in Spain’s top flight.
They join newly-promoted sides Almería and Real Valladolid in La Liga next season.
