Nick Woltemade comes away as the matchwinner in Germany’s 2-0 win over Luxembourg. Even though the game was much closer than in their last matchup, it was once again Germany’s clinical finishing that decided the game.
Here are our German player ratings from the game:
Germany Starting XI Player Ratings:
GK: Oliver Baumann – 8/10
Hoffenheim’s goalkeeper exuded calmness and was always there when he was needed. While he did not have to make any worldclass saves, he has proven to be a reliable goalkeeper for the national team. Fun fact: Baumann was Germany’s best player in a poor first half, getting more touches in than Woltemade and Gnabry combined.
RB: Ridle Baku – 6/10
Was given the nod after Kimmich suffered a minor injury in training. Seemed somewhat overwhelmed in the first half, but had a good showing in the second half and even provided the assist for Germany’s second goal.
CB: Waldemar Anton – 5/10
Solid, yet quiet game from the Dortmund centre-back. He was also rotated in after it was clear that Schlotterbeck would not get fit in time for the game. Had a good scoring opportunity in the 13th minute, but was denied by Moris.
CB: Jonathan Tah – 5/10
First game as captain of the national team – sadly it was not meant to be a very special game for the Bayern centre-back. Tah was solid defensively, but stood out because of some bad passes in the first half.
LB: David Raum – 5/10
An unusual quiet game for the Leipzig captain, who normally shows his explosiveness on the left flank for the national team. While he did not make any big mistakes, he also didn’t stand out in any way.
CDM: Leon Goretzka – 4/10
Had some positive moments as he showed some good reactions when pressing high – but his game overall was not good enough and he was subbed off shortly after halftime due to being at risk of receiving a red card.
CDM: Aleksandar Pavlović – 7/10
The young deeplying playmaker has become an integral part of Germany’s setup. Even though he did not shine in this game, there were again glimpses of brilliance in his play, for example in his long pass to Sané ahead of Germany’s first goal.
RM: Leroy Sané – 8/10
Maybe Germany’s most improved and motivated player on this night! He certainly had a chip on his shoulder coming into this game and he proved that he belongs to be in the team. He played a big role in both goals, but there is still a lot he can improve on, for example his 1v1 situations.
CAM: Serge Gnabry – 4/10
Was not able to keep his great form going. As mentioned above, Baumann had twice as many touches in this game and Bayern’s number 7 just couldn’t make it click against Luxembourg. He did provide some good runs in behind, but was never found by his teammates and had no shot on goal at all.
LM: Florian Wirtz – 5/10
Wirtz was again mainly used on the left, where Nagelsmann tries to give him enough space to be creative in. He also was alone in many counter attacking situations, which left him being found out by the defenders. Showed some good dribblings into the box, but his shots on goal tonight seemed imprecise, weak and just not good enough for a player of his calibre.
ST: Nick Woltemade – 8/10
Germany’s matchwinner and player of the night – but only due to his clinical finishing. Woltemade was on his way to a much lower rating, as he seemd quite disconnected from Germany’s play, but he was there when his country needed him. Two nices finishes in great moments during the match gave Germany the edge tonight.
