Via their official social media channels, Olympique Lyonnais have confirmed that Georges Mikautadze (23) will wear the number 69 shirt for the club next season.
The number 69 is significant in Lyon. The provocative number refers to the city’s and Rhône region’s administrative district within France. With LFP lifting restrictions on the numbers that players can wear on the back of their shirts in Ligue 1, there has been clamour within the fanbase of OL for one of their players to don the number so synonymous with their city. As a boyhood Lyon fan and someone born in the city, fans of Les Gones will be proud to see one of their own wear the shirt.
Florent Sanchez previously wore the number for Lyon as an academy graduate. However, the midfielder has since departed the club and the number has been vacated. Les Gones didn’t announce the Georgian international’s number upon the confirmation of his signing from Metz for €18.5m. Club captain Alexandre Lacazette wears the number 10 shirt that Mikautadze previously wore at the Lorraine club.
