Galatasaray sign Icardi from PSG

Super Lig champions Galatasaray have confirmed they are in official talks to secure the permanent signing of Argentine striker Mauro Icardi from Paris Saint-Germain.

Icardi showcased his scoring prowess on loan at Galatasaray last season, netting an impressive 22 goals and contributing seven assists in just 24 league appearances.

Such stellar performances have earned him the admiration of the Istanbul-based side, leading to discussions to make his stay permanent.

The 30-year-old centre-forward’s potential acquisition has ignited excitement among Galatasaray’s faithful.

He led them to their first league title since 2019, and they eagerly anticipate seeing him don their jersey again.

The deal is reportedly estimated at €10 million, a mere fifth of the amount PSG spent to secure Icardi’s services from Inter Milan in 2020.

However, despite a promising debut campaign in Paris, where he scored 20 goals in all competitions, Icardi faced challenges replicating his Serie A form on the other side of the Alps.

Struggling for playing time, he often found himself in the shadow of PSG’s formidable attacking trident comprising Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

He is set to return to Turkey, where he has re-established himself.

Galatasaray’s summer transfer market has been interesting, with former Marseille striker Cedric Bakambu joining their ranks earlier this week.

The Turkish club have also secured the signature of winger Wilfried Zaha on a three-year deal after his contract with Crystal Palace expired.

They beat off competition from Palace, Lazio, Palace and Fenerbahce to sign him. The 30-year-old signed a three-year contract and received a signing-on fee of €2.35m and an annual salary of €4.35m.

Galatasaray’s management are determined to assemble a squad capable of defending their title.

As the talks between Galatasaray and PSG progress, fans eagerly await official confirmation of Icardi’s signing, hoping it will bring a new and permanent era of goalscoring exploits for their club.

If all goes as planned, Icardi will again don the Galatasaray colours and lead their line for another season in Turkey’s top flight.
