Niclas Füllkrug says he used to look up to Miroslav Klose.
Germany and Werder Bremen forward Niclas Füllkrug has revealed he looked up to Miroslav Klose while growing up.
Klose is the all-time top scorer for the German national team and made a lasting impression on Füllkrug with five goals, including a hat-trick against Saudi Arabia, at the World Cup in 2002.
Sitting next to Thomas Müller at a press conference today, Füllkrug was asked about his role models and responded:
“Thomas and I are not that far apart in age, so he wasn’t exactly a role model. But I watched him a lot. I looked up to ‘Miro’ [Klose] a lot in 2002, when I was still a little boy.
“Otherwise, I’ve always tried to become my own player, so there weren’t any great idols.”
