UEFA have this afternoon announced that Switzerland will be the hosts of the 2025 Women’s European Championships, a decision made at the organisation’s Executive Congress in Lisbon this Tuesday.
The Swiss bid has beaten out Poland, a joint Scandinavian candidacy, and France. As L’Équipe reported last week, the chaotic scenes that preceded last year’s Champions League final at the Stade de France appear to have discredited the French bid, not least given that every UEFA board member was in Saint-Denis on the night.
On top of the organisational fiasco and poor fan experience in Paris last year, the recent government-mandated audit of the French FA which led to the resignation of long-time president Noël Le Graët did not help the bid’s cause either. The suspension and subsequent sacking of the FFF’s General Manager Florence Hardouin back in January, who was a member of the UEFA executive committee, also hurt France’s chances of hosting the tournament.
