Four Tottenham Players Would Love Mauricio Pochettino As Next Manager

Mauricio Pochettino has made no secret of his desire to return to Tottenham Hotspur one day. In fact, he has very publicly spoken about the Lilywhites in glowing terms as recently as this week, effectively saying yes to re-joining the club he left in 2019.

Tottenham are on the lookout for a new head coach after Thomas Frank was sacked earlier this week, ending just eight months in charge in north London.

Spurs are 16th in the Premier League table and involved in an unexpected relegation battle, while simultaneously qualifying for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

USA Believe They Have A ‘World-Class’ Manager In Pochettino

The likelihood is that Spurs will appoint an interim boss until the end of the current season and bring in a permanent new head coach in the summer.

It is the summer when Pochettino, one of the favourites for the vacant position, will be available, given he is contracted to guide one of the hosts – the USA – at the World Cup. He signed a deal with the USA in 2024 after US Soccer Federation sporting director Matt Crocker was tasked with bringing in a world-class coach.

Speaking to the High Performance Podcast, Pochettino and assistant coach Jesus Perez were asked which club they have been at they think most fondly of and was most special to them and their answer was clear.

“It is very simple: Tottenham,” Pochettino replied. “Still, the people on the street, the fans of Tottenham, really show the love and the appreciation, and I think that is why it’s so special.”

Pochettino’s comments come under the spotlight even more now Thomas Frank has been sacked by Spurs.

He would be a huge fans’ favourite and a manager to unite everyone together once more, given the huge disconnect between the fans and the club right now.

Not only that, but he would be a popular choice for, if not all, then certain players already at the Tottenham Hostpur Stadium.

During his five-year spell at the club between 2014 and 2019, Pochettino had to handle a young squad, getting them fitter than most other teams in the Premier League and firing towards the top of the table.

Young Players Shone Under Pochettino At Spurs

Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son

Spurs finished in the Champions League places four seasons in a row under Pochettino and the Argentine got the best out of inexperienced players. Harry Kane was 21 when Pochettino arrived in north London. The head coach signed an 18-year-old Dele Alli half a season later and Son Heung-min at the age of 23 a year after arriving at the club. Eric Dier had also arrived, aged 21, while Kyle Walker and Danny Rose were just 24 years of age. Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela had arrived aged 23.

Pochettino got the best out of young, inexperienced but talented players and there are a fair few at Tottenham right now who would love to see the Argentine come in on the basis that he can improve young players to meet their potential.

Eighteen-year-old Archie Gray has already regularly outperformed his more senior teammates this season. Lucas Bergvall at just turned 20 is already a shining light. Fellow 20-year-old Mathys Tel has not quite lived up to his billing after a big-money move from Bayern Munich, while Wilson Odobert at 21 has plenty of talent still to show.

Spurs have good young players who need nurturing. Pochettino has proven he can do just that.
