Former Bayern Munich defender Holger Badstuber announces retirement

Former Bayern Munich, Schalke and Stuttgart central-defender Holger Badstuber (33) has announced his retirement from professional football. The former Germany international has called time on his playing career after 13 years.

“Dear fans, after 13 years of professional football I announce the end of my career as an active player,” posted Badstuber on Instagram. “With 31 games for Germany, with World Cup and European Championship participation, six German championships, four DFB Pokal victories, winning the Champions League, the Club World Cup, the UEFA Supercup and three national Supercups, I can look back at a successful time.

“Of course, I would prefer a few less serious injuries. But the joy of achievement is very big. I am grateful for everything. Nevertheless, I will greatly miss the camaraderie I experienced as well as the closeness to the fans I’ve always cared about. I would like to thank you very much for your support throughout the years! I will remain true to football, my passion. I will following in my father’s footsteps and begin coaching training. I hope that I can keep football alive for a long time, but in a different role. Many thanks to all my companions and fans.”
