Fonseca on Lyon’s end of season: ‘Everyone here believes we can achieve something special’

Could this season finally be the one that sees Olympique Lyonnais return to the spotlight? Fourteen years after winning their last major trophy, the 2012 Coupe de France, Les Gones now seem closer than ever to regaining golden glory.

Not only because they are still in contention in all three competitions — third in Ligue 1, quarter-finalists in the Coupe de France and round of 16 in the Europa League — in which they are involved this season, but also because Les Rouge et Bleu, composed of genuine leadership figures and talented young players, appear to be imbued with a collective spirit rarely seen in recent years.

An excitement that Paulo Fonseca has clearly noticed. “Everyone here believes we can make something special this season,” said the OL coach in an interview with The Athletic. And now it’s up to the Portuguese coach and his team to bring the Rhône-based club back to where it truly belongs: at the top.
