Fans thrilled with Hertha’s new president

By Jonathan Dicks

Ultra Kay Bernstein is incredibly set to become Hertha Berlin’s new president, which begins an unprecedented chapter for the tumultuous capital club.

Kay Bernstein received 1,670 out of 3,016 votes as the 41-year-old beat out former Bundestag lawmaker and investor-backed Frank Steffel. Fans are ecstatic with the election result as Bernstein is one of their own as a founding member of “Harlekins Berlin ’98”, leading supporters through chants on a megaphone.

It’s come as a surprise that Bernstein, currently a communications manager, was able to defeat a conservative politician in this high-stakes race as he’s set to replace former president, Werner Gegenbauer who’s been in power since 2008. Supporters now have a little more hope that a people’s president can rid the club of its endless list of issues.

The club is suffering through on-field performance and devastating financial turmoil as they have nothing to show of €375 million invested in the club from Lars Windhorst since 2019. While Hertha narrowly avoided relegation to stay in the top flight, Bernstein is facing a near insurmountable task just to provide stability for a club that is experiencing turnover like never before.
