Manchester United could yet compete with Newcastle for the signing of RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko this summer, Fabrizio Romano has exclusively revealed in his GIVEMESPORT newsletter.
The Slovenia international is one of the top striker prospects on the market this summer and was a target for a number of clubs, but after those clubs opted for alternative striker options he now has fewer options too.
The Magpies have emerged as the frontrunners for his signature from the Bundesliga after they were rocked by the news that star man Alexander Isak wants to leave, amid strong interest from Liverpool, but they’re not alone in their interest.
Man Utd and Newcastle Keen on Sesko
Magpies preparing to make proposal to player
Sesko, who has been described as X, is open to leaving the Bundesliga club this summer for a new challenge, with Leipzig also needing to raise funds after missing out on the Champions League.
Newcastle are hopeful of being able to seal a deal for the 22-year-old to ensure they still have a top striker leading the line if Isak leaves, but Romano has revealed that he is a name being discussed internally by Man Utd and they could make a move to compete for his signature.
“The name has been discussed internally at Man United but no bid or concrete talks yet. Newcastle are preparing a proposal to the player.”
Man Utd are keen to sign a striker for manager Ruben Amorim after already bolstering their attack by signing Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo this summer, but their top targets have all gone elsewhere.
Liam Delap chose to join Chelsea while Viktor Gyokeres is set to join Arsenal, and Victor Osimhen’s wage demands proved to be too hefty and he is set to return to Galatasaray after his successful loan spell there in 2024/25. Sesko isn’t the only player being looked at by Old Trafford chiefs however, with Ollie Watkins also a target, which could see Newcastle hold an advantage in the race for Sesko.
The Magpies are also looking to sign Brentford striker Yoane Wissa this summer to strengthen their attack, and have already signed Anthony Elanga, as they prepare to return to the Champions League in 2025/26.
