Santi Gimenez is eyeing up a comeback at AC Milan. After being sidelined for four months with an ankle injury sustained against Atalanta back in October, the Mexican forward has circled this upcoming weekend’s clash with Inter for a dream return.
On December 18th, Gimenez flew to Amsterdam for surgery, and now the worst seems to be behind him. Seeing him in the squad for the Derby della Madonnina remains speculative, but in the meantime, he’s hopeful and determined.
Gimenez will reportedly undergo a check-up on his ankle today, and it could come as a watershed moment in deciding whether he can return to training with the group.
That said, even if he gets the green light, he’ll need time to regain his fitness and match rhythm, and he should likely aim for a spot on Massimiliano Allegri’s bench.
During these four months out, Gimenez has always been fixed to the task at hand. The criticism he received at the start of the season regarding missed chances has only motivated him further.
According to media in Milan, he has continued to work every day, in the gym and physiotherapy departments to speed up his recovery, in turn consolidating the respect of Moncada, Ibrahimovic, and Furlani.
Those figures were the ones who strongly sought him out in January last year, shelling out €32 million plus bonuses for the then-Feyenoord hitman. This investment hasn’t fully paid off so far, with seven goals in 30 games for the Rossoneri.
Yet, with an Italian rebirth in mind, this is a fact Gimenez remains fully aware of. If he can get back in touch with the form in Rotterdam that saw him net 65 goals in 105 all-competition outings, he can still be a very dangerous cog in the Allegri machine.
