Ex-Spain manager Luis Enrique reveals Premier League desire

Former Spain head coach Luis Enrique has revealed his desire to work in the Premier League.

Enrique has been without a job since parting ways with the Spanish national team following the shock World Cup elimination against Morocco in the round of 16, with Luis de la Fuente now serving as La Roja’s new head coach.

Despite his dismissal, the former Barcelona gaffer remains a sought-after coach, wanted by some of the top European clubs.

Enrique has now declared his admiration for the Premier League but insisted that he will only move to a club with a promising project.

“I have a special attraction, I would like to go to England to work,” Enrique told Cadena SER.

“I follow English football a lot, more than Spanish football. In the Spanish league, I do follow the biggest teams and little else.

“If I see myself working in the Premier in June? No, the truth is that I don’t, do you know why? Because it is very difficult for it to happen. I’m not going to deceive you, I’m not going to go to any team in the Premier, I would like to go to one that has clear options to do important things.”

Manchester United were looking at Enrique as one of the top options before they appointed Erik ten Hag.

Meanwhile, the former Celta Vigo gaffer has also been linked with a move to Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Blues could look to appoint a new manager should Graham Potter fail to deliver a trophy this season, while Spurs are on the continuous lookout for a new head coach following the departure of Antonio Conte.

Elsewhere in Spain, Atletico Madrid have identified Enrique as one of the potential replacements for Diego Simeone, whose future has been the subject of speculation following a disappointing season.

As far as his portfolio goes, the Spanish gaffer led Barca to a continental treble in the 2014/15 season and the infamous remontada against Paris Saint-Germain – the 6-1 come-back win – the following season.

Enrique’s work at the Spanish national team was also notable as he forged a young and exciting squad and inspired them to the semi-finals of Euro 2020 and a runners-up finish in the Nations League in 2021.
