Everton are “probably in pole position” to sign Southampton striker Che Adams, according to Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor.

The Scotland international is attracting attention from several Premier League clubs, but Taylor reckons the Merseysiders are currently leading the race for his signature.

What’s the latest news involving Adams?

According to the Daily Mail, Everton have ‘made a move’ to sign Adams, although they face stiff competition from Nottingham Forest, Wolves and Leeds.

Forest’s interest in the striker might have cooled following the arrival of Emmanuel Dennis and potential signing of Neal Maupay at the City Ground, but Everton still have a fight on their hands to bring him to Goodison Park.

This comes after The Athletic claimed that Southampton were willing to allow Adams to leave, with Ralph Hasenhuttl responding to those reports by leaving him on the bench against Tottenham on the opening day.

He would return to action eight days later in the draw with Leeds, but Adams’ St Mary’s future is far from resolved, although talkSPORT recently reported that Saints now have ‘no plans’ to sell him.

What did Taylor say about Adams?

Taylor is staggered that Southampton would consider letting Adams move on but reckons that Everton are at the front of the queue to sign him.

He told GIVEMESPOT: “I find it astounding that he may leave Southampton, but I’m not sure Leeds will be his destination, I think that Everton are probably in pole position on that front.”

Would Adams be a good signing for Everton?

Given their state at the top end of the pitch, Adams would certainly bolster Frank Lampard’s options.

Currently, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is out injured and isn’t expected to return for more than a month, while Richarlison left for Tottenham earlier this summer.

As a result, Lampard’s central options are Salomon Rondon, who’s scored just one league goal since his return to England, and Anthony Gordon, who has just four career goals to his name.

Therefore, while Adams might not have a productive top-flight goal record himself, he’s better than what they’ve currently got.

In 97 Premier League appearances since his £15m move from Birmingham in 2019, Adams has scored 20 goals and registered 11 assists, which is a goal return Everton could badly do with right now.
