According to Kicker, Borussia Dortmund II head coach Enrico Maaßen is set to take the reigns at Augsburg.
The 38-year-old is due to be announced as the club’s new head coach as he makes the giant leap from the 3. Liga to the Bundesliga.
It’s reported that the appointment of Maaßen will cost Augsburg a base fee of around €300k but could rise depending on his success. He will replace Markus Weinzierl, who left the Bavarian club at the end of the season.
It’s not the first time a manager has jumped from the third division to the Bundesliga. As recently as 2020, Sebastian Hoeneß moved from Bayern Munich II to Hoffenheim before being sacked two years later.
Maaßen arrived at Borussia Dortmund in 2020 from SV Rödinghausen, where he held the position of head coach.
During his time as BVB II head coach, Maaßen won promotion to the 3. Liga after finishing top of the Regionalliga West.
