Eintracht Frankfurt’s Robin Koch responds to leadership critiques: “I can take it.”

Eintracht Frankfurt captain Robin Koch has addressed the public criticism he faced following last weekend’s humiliating 6-0 Bundesliga defeat away at RB Leipzig. The 30-year-old German international, who responded with a much-improved performance in Friday evening’s 1-0 home victory over 1. FC Cologne, insisted that he was happy to shoulder the blame during difficult times if it meant protecting his teammates.

Koch was withdrawn at halftime against Leipzig and subsequently criticized by head coach Adi Hütter. The Austrian questioned his captain’s ability to organize the defense, although he made clear that Koch would retain both his starting place and the captain’s armband. The fact that Eintracht had changed coaches and virtually all the players around Koch in the past 10 months naturally ramped up the criticism on the SGE skipper.

Friday’s victory provided a welcome response. Frankfurt secured their first Bundesliga home win since March and registered their first clean sheet after conceding in 13 consecutive league fixtures. Koch won all of his aerial duels and earned special praise from Hütter, who suggested that his captain had produced his best performance under the returning coach.

Robin Koch welcomes responsibility for Frankfurt’s struggles

Speaking to Sky Germany after the match, Koch acknowledged that the previous week had been difficult.

“It’s never nice when you have to read so much about yourself in public, but that’s part of football,” Koch explained. “When difficult periods come along, the negative things are directed at the leaders first, and especially at me as captain. But I’m glad I’m the one taking the criticism rather than someone weaker.”

The comments provide an interesting insight into Koch’s approach to a leadership position he officially inherited from Kevin Trapp in August 2025. Koch had already spoken at length about his leadership responsibilities during the previous campaign, when he regularly deputized for Trapp. The defender now finds himself confronting a considerably more difficult situation as Frankfurt attempt to overcome their prolonged defensive problems.

Koch nevertheless insisted that the team’s collective response mattered far more than his personal rehabilitation.

“It was very important for us, for the entire club, especially after last week’s game, to show a reaction like that,” Koch told Sky. “I have to give the team enormous credit. It wasn’t easy to switch things around again so quickly, but we showed determination and commitment over the full 90 minutes.”

Frankfurt captain refuses to shout for the cameras

Perhaps Koch’s most interesting remarks concerned the expectations surrounding his leadership style. Hütter had specifically criticized his captain’s lack of vocal organization during the Leipzig debacle. Koch, however, made clear that he has no intention of changing his personality merely to satisfy outside observers.

“I’m not someone who goes around shouting on the pitch,” Koch explained. “The lads know that I lead by example during the week and that when something needs to be said, I say it. I’m not going to start shouting just do the cameras can catch it.”

The distinction between communicating effectively and putting on a demonstrative display of leadership is particularly relevant given Frankfurt’s recent difficulties. Koch’s role in organizing the defensive line remains crucial to a system that places considerable demands on its central defenders.

Friday’s improved performance offered some encouragement that the captain can meet those demands without fundamentally changing his approach.

Koch also believes the determination Frankfurt displayed against Köln must become the standard moving forward. The German international described the performance as an important signal to his teammates ahead of next Saturday’s difficult Bundesliga assignment away at Borussia Dortmund.

“That was exactly what we need,” Koch emphasized. “In Dortmund too!”
