After Dino Toppmöller’s dismissal, Mario Götze’s contract extension talks at Eintracht Frankfurt were put on hold. Now, Bild report that discussions will resume no later than March.
As of now, all signs point to an extension, even after the arrival of Albert Riera as head coach. Götze is leaning towards a stay in Frankfurt, but it’s known that the 33-year-old would have to take a pay cut on his reported €3.5m salary. Additionally, an extension is unlikely to fail due to financial reasons as Frankfurt’s No. 27 prioritises his family, health and his relationship with the management team – all of which are important to the World Cup winner.
In a short tenure, Riera has also impressed Götze, which will only aid his stay beyond the summer. “What he’s doing, the way we’re playing, is very good. It’s fun,” said the former Borussia Dortmund man.
When his talks were put on hold because of Toppmöller’s sacking, Götze said: “There were more important things.” Now, it’s conceivable that he could be playing football under Riera in Frankfurt next season.
