Max Eberl has explained why Bayern Munich need to be patient with Joao Palhinha and why he’s expected to play such an important role in the future.
After joining Bayern Munich for €51 million in the summer, Joao Palhinha finally made his first start for the club in Saturday’s 6-1 demolition of Holstein Kiel.
In an interview with the Abendzeitung, Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl explains why it took so long for the Portugal international to make his first start.
“Joao comes from the Premier League, which is a different league. You have to take that into account,” he said.
“He needed time to get used to everything – to the way Vinnie wants to play. New club, new city, new language, new coach, new team – everything is new. It just takes time.”
Eberl is certain that Palhinha’s importance to the club will grow.
“We defend very high, man to man. So when the opponent plays a long ball and it’s a one-on-one, you need a No. 6 who thinks defensively, switches immediately and helps the defender – and that’s Joao,” he said.
