Everton will play a more ‘direct style of football’ under Sean Dyche to try and salvage their Premier League survival prospects, journalist Dean Jones has informed GIVEMESPORT.
The former Burnley manager was appointed at Goodison Park earlier this week and is now preparing to face Arsenal in his inaugural Premier League match in charge of the club.
Everton latest news
Since the appointment of Dyche, Everton have been linked with free agent duo Andre Ayew and Isco to try and bolster their ranks in the forward positions, as reported by The Times.
In the January window, the Toffees were the only side in the English top flight that failed to make any additions, causing fan protests at their Finch Farm training complex on deadline day.
Of course, there is also the small matter of facing league leaders Arsenal at Goodison Park on Saturday, which will be Dyche’s first fixture in charge at his new club at a time where points on the board are needed to steady the ship.
Everton sit joint-bottom of the Premier League on 15 points with Southampton. However, a victory over the Gunners, coupled with favourable results elsewhere, could see them exit the relegation zone this weekend.
What has Dean Jones said about Sean Dyche?
Jones believes that Dyche will adopt a pragmatic approach to running affairs at Goodison Park in the initial period of his tenure.
Jones told GMS: “The one thing I would say that is going to be in their favour is that Dyche will play a more direct style of football, which 100% is what the team should be looking at considering where they’ve been so far this season.
“I think by bringing in a Bielsa-type figure, it was risky, you know, to inflict an entire new footballing philosophy on people and have, you know, such hard running drills and expectations on everybody when everyone’s low, really, really hard to do. Sean Dyche’s style of management might actually work in a moment like this and it has to; otherwise, Everton are down.”
Will Sean Dyche succeed as Everton manager?
In short, Dyche needs to succeed as Everton boss because the alternative, as Jones eluded to, is a first Premier League relegation for the Toffees in their entire history, which would be inconceivable when you consider the size of the club.
It doesn’t really matter on the face of it how Dyche chooses to set up as long as he gets results. However, you imagine his best bet would be a pragmatic style of football similar to what he instilled at Turf Moor, where he routinely exceeded expectations with a Burnley squad formed on a shoestring budget.
Cultivating a team spirit will also be necessary for the 51-year-old to get the best out of his players, which may be helped by the fact the likes of Dwight McNeil, James Tarkowski and Michael Keane all have previous experience working under his stewardship.
This may prove vital in their survival hopes, with the first test being as hard as they come against an Arsenal side that seems to be indomitable right now under former Everton icon Mikel Arteta.
