DFB to speak to Julian Nagelsmann and Matthias Sammer

As reported by Matt Law, the DFB will speak to both Julian Nagelsmann and Matthias Sammer about replacing Hansi Flick as Germany’s head coach.

The DFB sacked Hansi Flick following an uninspiring 1-4 defeat to Japan on Sunday. The announcement made Flick the first Germany head coach to be sacked since 1926. Not quite the achievement Flick envisioned when taking up the role in 2021.

Julian Nagelsmann is currently the firm favourite to replace the 58-year-old. The former Bayern Munich head coach has been linked to a variety of jobs in Europe since being relieved of his duties back in March. If Nagelsmann is appointed, the DFB may have to pay up to €10m to Bayern as the coach is still on their payroll.

Matthias Sammer coached Borussia Dortmund between 2000 and 2004 before moving to VfB Stuttgart for one season. The former German international has since taken up posts at Bayern Munich as sporting director before becoming an advisor at Borussia Dortmund. The 56-year-old is also a member of the DFB task force that was established after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

If neither of these is appointed, then the likely scenario would be for Rudi Völler to take the reigns until after the European Championships in Germany next year.
