According to RMC Sport, DAZN have not ruled out the possibility of withholding Ligue 1 TV right payments due to a lack of loyalty from the league’s governing body – the LFP. The broadcaster are considering taking legal action due to the relationship between the two respective bodies.
A source close to the negotiations between the TV rights holder and the LFP has said that the league ‘being to blame’ for piracy is a sticking part at the heart of the discussions between the two parties which are currently ongoing. Withholding payments could put further pressure on many Ligue 1 clubs that are already suffering from cash flow struggles.
Mediapro 2.0?
In 2020, the LFP agreed to a TV rights deal with Mediapro which led to the launch of the TV channel Téléfoot. The deal was record-breaking financially for Ligue 1 and was set to improve the finances of clubs across the division. However, with the payments not paid, an emergency deal had to be negotiated with Canal+ to prevent clubs from going bankrupt.
