Amid a damning lack of minutes for Arne Slot’s title-chasing Liverpool, the out-of-favour Darwin Nunez has taken to X (formerly Twitter) to question the 46-year-old Dutch tactician’s integrity before immediately deleting said post.
The solitary point against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday will see the Reds lift the 20th English top flight title – in doing so, they’ll match the record of Manchester United – but it seems that not all players are best pleased about their achievement.
Nunez, who was signed from Benfica in the summer of 2022, has been slandered for his lack of potency in front of goal – and since Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp at the helm, he’s fallen behind Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo in the centre-forward pecking order.
All fingers are now pointing towards a summer exit for the 25-year-old – who joined Liverpool in the same summer that Manchester City secured Erling Haaland’s services – and he may have complicated matters with his most recent post on X.
Translated into English, Nunez – who last logged a 90-minute display in the Premier League for the Merseysiders in December – wrote the following before taking it down. Per the Empire of the Kop, he wrote:
“No wonder I didn’t play more, because the last game I started in the Premier League went well and suddenly…”
Game time has been in short supply for the Artigas-born ace of late. In fact, he’s not started under Slot’s tutelage since their 3-1 victory over relegation-confirmed Southampton in March 2025 and his cryptic message is a reference to recent reports.
Said reports suggest that Slot – widely regarded as one of the best managers in world football – would need to pay Benfica an extra €5 million (£4.3m) if Nunez, a 35-cap, 13-goal Uruguay international, starts just one more game for the Reds.

Exclusive: Fabrizio Romano Confirms ‘World-Class’ Liverpool Star ‘Will Leave’
GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano confirms ‘world-class’ Liverpool star will leave the club this summer, and it’s not Alexander-Arnold.
At the time of writing, the centre-forward – across the Champions League and England’s top flight – has started 49 games but newspaper A Bola, via Sport Witness, claimed that should he hit the 50-mark, his employers would be required to cough up.
That said, per Mail Online, Bergentheim-born Slot responded to the reports and dismissed the aforementioned claims that Nunez’s lack of minutes are down to the little-known rule.
“Do you always believe what journalists say? Not always? Me neither. Sometimes you should, but sometimes it’s better not to believe everything that is written about players. This is completely new to me and I’ve said many times that I’m working at a club here where it’s really nice to work.”
Despite being deleted almost immediately, Nunez’s comments have still caused a stir among the Anfield faithful. One said: “A day before a historic title win After being supported all the way through Extremely immature and wrong Darwin Nunez should be sold first.”
On the same note, another Liverpool supporter suggested that Nunez should be firmly on the chopping block this summer – and that his belatedly-deleted post is ‘unforgivable’ given the timing and his poor form in front of goal.
“Darwin’s post about not starting is unforgivable. Truly unprofessional and disrespectful to Arne Slot who gave him opportunities and not repaid the favour, when some fans still believed in him turning his career around. Especially a day before becoming champions. He has to go.”
