Although their last fight against each other happened almost eight years ago, the hatchet is still not buried between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier. It may have seemed like the pair had put their heated and bitter past behind them prior to UFC 309 where Jones was interviewed by Cormier on the UFC weigh-in show, however, following Jones’ recent antics on social media where he has been trying to justify his decision not to fight Tom Aspinall, the rivalry has been reignited as the pair have gone back and forth.
As is usually the case with Jones, he took the first shot at Cormier, taking to social media last week, slamming both ‘DC’ and Chael Sonnen for their coverage of his situation with Aspinall. Having had such a bitter and heated rivalry in the past, after what Jones said, Cormier was never going to bite his tongue and stay quiet, and during a recent video uploaded to his YouTube channel, ‘DC’ responded and slammed ‘Bones’ for his recent behaviour which is holding up the UFC’s heavyweight division.

‘DC’ claims that if he were the heavyweight champion and Tom Aspinall was next in line, he would’ve already fought him
Daniel Cormier has issued a brutal response to Jon Jones’ recent jabs at him on social media. Despite not talking badly about his old rival on his show Good Guy/Bad Guy, Jones took shots at both Cormier and his co-host Chael Sonnen on social media last week and insinuated that they need to talk about him to keep their show relevant and that he makes a lot more money than the two of them. When ‘Bones’ goes after him, Cormier is never going to stay quiet and just take it and during a recently released video on his YouTube channel, ‘DC’ issued his response.
Cormier said the following on his YouTube channel:
“I know what Jon Jones made in Thailand. I was offered to coach this show with Jon Jones. His resume is impeccable, star power, his ability to sell, matches up with anybody in the business. But guess what? Daniel Cormier’s resume matches up with anybody in the business. I bring eyes like other people in the business.
Jon Jones don’t make more money than me in a week! He makes more money than me when he fights! We’re over here eating. The biggest paydays you ever had were directly tied to me! I’m talking about you, and I’m getting paid to talk about you, but I don’t fight no more because all I can really do is talk. That’s what I do.”
Although Cormier admitted that all he can do is talk now that his days actively competing in MMA are over, it didn’t stop him from taking one last jab at Jones, which will no doubt get under his skin, as it is once again a criticism of his current behaviour holding up the UFC heavyweight division and blatantly refusing to fight the division’s interim champion, Tom Aspinall.
“You fight! Or at least, you’re supposed to fight. You’re talking about me, Francis, Chael, and almost ignoring the right thing. You can then stick it to everybody like you’ve done on so many occasions and tell ’em about it. I can tell you guys on good authority, if I was still fighting today, and I was still the heavyweight champion and Tom Aspinall was the number one contender, I would’ve already fought him. One thousand per cent. Knowing how dangerous it would’ve done nothing but excite me. This dude Jon Jones is still talking? Come on.”
Although Cormier is facing criticism already on social media following his response from fans of Jones, he is correct. When ‘DC’ was champion in the UFC, not only in the light heavyweight division, but at heavyweight also, he shied away from no challenges and consistently faced the best and most terrifying fighters in his division. Although, as mentioned, the likes of Francis Ngannou and Aspinall are tough challenges, Cormier took on all-comers and fought opponents just as terrifying, such as Anthony Johnson, Derrick Lewis, Alexander Gustafsson and Stipe Miocic three times.
