Could Urs Fischer move to international management?

It hasn’t even been 24 hours since Urs Fischer and Union Berlin parted ways. However, according to SportBild, the former Union man has been linked with a potential move to the Switzerland national team.

Union Berlin announced the departure of long-serving head coach, Urs Fischer, with immediate effect on Wednesday. This was following a run of 13 defeats in 14 games that leaves the Southeast Capital side bottom of the Bundesliga, bottom of Group C in the Champions League, and knocked out of the DFB Pokal.

However, Urs Fischer will go down as the most successful coach in Union Berlin history.

In his five years at the club, Fischer took Union into the Bundesliga, then into the Europa League, and then into this year’s Champions League. A feat which we may not see again in European football.

It’s this remarkable run that led the native Swiss to be linked with his country’s national role.

As per the report, Fischer may become the new Swiss head coach after the European Championships in 2024. Switzerland are likely to seal qualification this November with games against Israel, Kosovo, and Romania. However, they have currently only won once in their previous four games.

This uninspiring form has mounted pressure on current coach Murat Yakin with fans believing he is over his head in the role.

Should the position become vacant next summer and Fischer has yet to return to the game, it could be the ideal match.
