Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte “needs to know” he can achieve success before committing to a long-term future amid contract talks, journalist Dean Jones believes.
It’s over 14 years since Tottenham last won silverware and Spurs could be heading for another trophy-less campaign this time around.
What’s the latest news involving Antonio Conte?
Having joined the club following Nuno Espírito Santo’s sacking last year, it’s been a mixed 13 months in charge for Conte.
Quick to adopt his traditional back-five approach at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Conte was able to guide Spurs to a top-four finish last term, pipping rivals Arsenal to the final Champions League spot.
It ended a two-season exile from Europe’s premier competition for Spurs, who this season managed to negotiate a tricky group to qualify for the Champions League knockouts.
Finishing top of a group containing Eintracht Frankfurt, Sporting and Olympique de Marseille, Tottenham were rewarded with a winnable tie against AC Milan in the last-16.
But Spurs could risk losing Conte, should the Italian manager feel like the club isn’t in a position to win trophies.
What has Jones said about Conte?
One of Conte’s objectives, when he took the Tottenham job, was to end the club’s long trophy drought.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Jones worries Conte could walk away from Spurs, if progress isn’t made on the competitive front.
“Conte doesn’t settle for mediocrity,” Jones explained.
“He strives for success and he needs to know he can actually win things with Tottenham.”
“At the moment, there’s still a little distance from that target.”
The perennial problem for Spurs managers has been a lack of backing from the board, but reports suggest chairman Daniel Levy is prepared to back Conte in January.
However, Jones believes simply giving Conte money to spend in the transfer market might not be enough to keep him at the club.
“Conte has to be given full belief that things can continue to go his way in order for him to stay.”
Can Conte deliver silverware to Tottenham?
Defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup earlier this year has already put Conte and Spurs on the backfoot this season.
Should 2023 prove to be the year Tottenham’s hunt for a trophy ends, the north Londoners will have to lift either the Premier League, Champions League or the FA Cup.
Already eight points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal and a rank outsider to win the Champions League, it looks like Spurs’ only realistic hope of silverware will come in the FA Cup.
Drawn at home to Portsmouth in next month’s FA Cup Third Round, progression to the next stage of that competition is to be expected and Conte will be hoping to replicate what he did at Chelsea with Spurs this season.
Conte guided Chelsea to the FA Cup in 2017/18, so don’t be surprised to see the former Juventus boss take his Tottenham side on a successful cup run in 2023.
