Having wrapped up the second Ligue 1 title of his management career with a draw against Strasbourg tonight, PSG’s Christophe Galtier spoke after the game about what he saw as a successful season on the domestic front.
Speaking to Canal+, as reported by RMC, the former Lille coach nevertheless recognised that the league leaders had experienced some drastic drops in form since the turn of the year.
Having started the season with a 17-match unbeaten run, a post-World Cup rut – which started with a defeat in Lens on New Year’s Day – meant that their title defence had remained in doubt until the end of the season.
“On the domestic front, it’s a success. We are the champions. A catastrophic season is when PSG don’t win the league. Even though it may seem easy, being champions requires a performance. Twice [in recent years] PSG hadn’t won it, and those were very, very difficult seasons. We’ve won the league and the Trophée des Champions. There were some poor spells, some very poor spells in the second half of the season. We are going to analyse it all calmly, with hindsight, and with a lot of clarity.”
Galtier will be able to celebrate clinching PSG’s record 11th Ligue 1 title next weekend, as Clermont come to the Parc des Princes for the final matchday. Although he looks set to be replaced over the summer, Galtier’s sole season in the French capital will have at least seen him lead the team to a historic piece of silverware.
